TEST DRIVE - New CAT pattern 05/08/2014
The common admission test (CAT), a
pre requisite for entrance to Indian Institutes of Management
(IIM), will be conducted by IIM Indore in a two-day testing window
on November 16 and 22. The test pattern has a few changes this year
but the syllabus and sections remain the same.
“I wouldn't recommend a major change in preparation since the same
topics continue to be important. However, a slight change in
strategy will prepare aspirants for the new pattern,“ says Rajesh
Balasubramanian, a CAT expert and an author.Unlike previous years,
students can move between the two sections with greater
flexibility. They do not have to complete the quantitative aptitude
section to move to the logical reasoning section, as was the case
earlier. “Students will benefit from this as they can move to the
next section if they have finished one sec tion before time or if
they are feeling more confident. However, moving back and forth
between questions frequently can af fect their scores,“ explains
Balasubramanian.
It is important to use the mock tests to determine one's strengths
and use this knowledge to one's benefit. “If one has 170 minutes,
then I would suggest spending an equal period of 60 minutes each on
the two sections. The last 50 minutes should be a buffer period
that can be divided unequally between the two sections depending on
how well one has performed in the respective section,“ says
Balasubramanian.
Since the number of questions has gone up to 100 50 in each section
the likelihood of being tested on diverse topics has increased. For

Cambridge, Oxford set for hefty fee hike 05/08/2014
Britain's Oxford and Cambridge universities are set to
significantly hike their student fees to cover their rising
costs.According to plans under consideration by the Conservative
Party , the elite British institutions could be allowed to increase
fees to as much as £16,000 a year.
Under points being considered for the Tory manifesto, former higher
education minister David Willetts told the Sunday Times that he had
held talks with a dozen of Britain's top universities to explore
whether they would want to buy their students' loan debts and
try to collect them.
In return, they would be expected to raise their fees above the
current £9,000-ayear limit.“There is a long-standing issue with
Oxbridge, because their distinctive high model means that the
£9,000 does not cover all of their costs,“ Willetts told the
newspaper.
Both the universities confirmed that they estimat ed they needed up
to £16,000 to cover the costs of teaching students in small groups
and within the expensive college system and currently funded the
gap themselves.
The UK government faces a debt time-bomb and latest estimates
suggest that up to 45% of the loans students borrow for university
fees and living expenses will never be repaid because graduates
will not command high enough salaries.
A research exercise tracking how successful 170,000 graduates have
been in starting lucrative careers over the past 20 years is
expected to spark demands that taxpayers stop paying for degrees
for students with poor salary prospects.
